The Newport Crescent Home: Mid-Century Splendor

39stairwayAt FEH, we love how Mid-Century design incorporates open concept floor plans while bringing its inhabitants closer to the natural environment with floor to ceiling windows. Our newest Mid-Century property located in Norfolk, Virginia epitomizes the design aesthetic that we love.

This custom home was designed in 1955 by Paul D. Woodward, AIA for Mr. and Mrs. Weisberg. The driving concept of the home’s interior design was to create a breezeway leading to a private courtyard entry. The placement on the large riverfront lot allowed for bright and dramatic southern exposures, cross breezes and perfect water views. The home’s subtle facade faces the street while the property’s dramatic exposure is reserved until you pass through the breezeway.

The house was expanded in 1962, adding eight feet to the back, 8exrr02providing the full width upstairs porch and expanding the downstairs den and covered patio. The home has custom wrought iron railings throughout and the 1962 addition matched the custom rails on the upstairs porch for seamless continuity. In 1962,  an in-ground swimming pool was built with professional landscaping. The current owners had to remove the pool since it was not operational, but the backyard Camellias and round stepping stones by the patio are remnants of the original design. The original landscape drawings are available for future owners who may want to re-design the yard back to the way it was originally intended. In addition, portions of the original architectural drawings and specifications are available for the next steward of this property.

28kit1The current owners bought this property from the original owners in 2008 and have made many upgrades to the property. The updated gourmet kitchen includes custom cherry cabinets, Silestone counters, a Walker Zanger back-splash, Brazilian heated slate floors and a Bertazzoni gas range. All of the modern and luxurious interior upgrades to this home honor the original mid-century architectural heritage and design. The huge great room is designed to host large social gatherings with many open spaces for relaxing and fluid-single story entertaining. The original terrazzo “rug” under the dining table still remains today.  The home has 5 bedrooms, two of which are master suites, one suite is upstairs that offers breathtaking water views while the other master suite is located on the first floor. This property is most certainly a perfect place to entertain family, friends and colleagues.

With its slab on grade foundation and steel frame with the exterior 5exfr3bfacade materials being comprised of concrete stucco and double brick masonry this property is built to last with minimal maintenance. Originally, the home was built to “state of the art” standards, including one of the early central heating and cooling systems, grounded electrical and energy-efficient double-paned glass. The home has also had spray-foam insulation added into the walls of the kitchen and under the office floors and many other system upgrades for additional energy efficiency. Today, due to meticulous maintenance and stewardship this home is in outstanding condition and is still state of the art. This exceptional property  is a rare mid-century find in the heart of Norfolk’s sought after Riverpoint neighborhood where any new owner will happily and proudly be able to call this their home.
