Presiding over south Chatham from atop a gentle knoll with a sweeping green lawn and massive oaks. Originally a "double house with central hall" the residence was built around 1836 by James L. Poindexter, a Chatham merchant and architect. "Oak Hall" is a fine example of modified Federal design with its gracious proportions, portico supported by six beautiful Ionic columns, four handsome chimineys, bold dentil molding along the eaves above the bearded clapboard, and a leaded glass fanlight above the large front door. Over its 165 year history, the house has undergone several renovations. Now the facade is more like its original design.

From 1873 until around 1902, "Oak Hall" was the home of beloved civil War surgeon and Gettysburg hero, Dr. Rawley White Martin, who named it "Morea."

Today, the original name of "Oak Hall" has been reinstated Nearby stands a small two-story frame house built around 1800 that Mr. Poindexter used as a schoolhouse for his children and their tutor. During Dr. Martin's ownership, the building served as his doctor's office.

The graciousness of the exterior of the manor home is echoed inside, with large rooms, high ceilings, arched doorways, and giant windows bathing the interior with light. Enhancing the elegant ambiance are lovely antiques, Oriental rugs, wallpapers and window treatments throughout. "Oak Hall" is currently owned by, and lovingly restored and enhanced by, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis and Bland Wall who have added many historic, repurposed and green features to the structures which, in addition to the manor home and guest home, include a 4 bay workshop, a rustic cottage on the pond, inground pool and basketball court, and chicken house, kennel and dog run.

We invite you to live in the magic of a bygone era while  enjoying modern amenities and conveniences at Oak Hall.
