An Ambassador's Historic Home in Cambridge, Mass

Swanee Hunt knew she was home the moment she stepped into this historic house in Cambridge, Mass. ‘I didn’t even get past the first room,’ she says, adding, ‘It’s like walking into a cathedral.’ It was 1997. Ms. Hunt had finished a posting as U.S. Ambassador to Austria and moved to Cambridge to start the Women and Public Policy Program at Harvard Kennedy School. Her husband, conductor Charles Ansbacher, who died in 2010, had come to Boston a few days earlier and narrowed the search to three homes. This one was on Brattle Street, known as Tory Row before the American Revolutionary War.
