Property Description

Dunton Hot Springs is a small and exclusive resort nestled deep in the San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Rockies. This perfectly restored ghost town thrives on contradictions; hand-hewn log cabins exquisitely furnished, a life-worn saloon serving food of startling quality, lung torturing trails followed by pampering massages, sensuous hot springs beneath shimmering snow banks. Free of cell phones, this romantic old mining town still provides high speed wireless internet access in every cabin and video conferencing in our dance hall to the comforting sound of a tumbling waterfall.

Established in 1885, Dunton was a small, unincorporated settlement in Dolores County, Colorado. Early-day Dunton was a mining camp with a population of less than fifty people until the mine was sold to a group of investors in 1897. The mine’s ore production and the town’s population peaked around 1905, with just under 300 people. Most residents left the camp by 1910, and by 1918, the town was deserted. That year, long-time residents, Joe and Dominica Rosario, purchased the entire town and operated the property as a cattle ranch. During the 1970s and the 1980s, the property was operated as a dude ranch for tourists. By the early 1990s, the ranch had been closed down and was for sale. In 1994, Dunton Hot Springs was purchased by Christoph Henkel and after a seven-year renovation and design process, it is now a destination for the discerning traveler and adventure seeker.

Features And Amenities

Dining—Our chefs use local and regional ingredients (some from our own farm and vineyard) to create a new menu each day. We eat at a long, antique table in the center of the Saloon, a tradition carried over from the big cattle outlaws that we choose to maintain.

Complimentary Activities—1600 acres of wilderness area in the San Juan Mountains to explore, five separate areas to enjoy the natural hot springs, mountain bikes, access to fantastic hiking trails, wildflower and nature walks, ice skating, use of ice hockey equipment, snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, stargazing, lawn games, screening room in Dance Hall with access to over 800 DVDs, teepee, boxing gym and fitness center. Internet access is available throughout Dunton.

Additional Activities—For the adventurous, Dunton offers more wilderness than can be reasonably explored in one lifetime. Guided on and off-property activities are available during all seasons. In addition, vineyard tours and wine tastings, spa services, yoga, and photography and fine art lessons are available all year round. It is advisable to book any guided activities well in advance of arrival. We have an on-site activities coordinator who can help arrange any adventure.

Spa Treatments—We invite you to experience the very best in holistic and therapeutic treatments. Our luxurious facilities promote the ultimate in relaxation and rejuvenation. Each treatment is designed to offer a unique experience, using powerful massage techniques and products selected for our climate and location. Dynamic ingredients and medical‐grade formulas are combined to provide a range of spa‐therapies that address every lifestyle concern. Please book in advance to ensure availability.

For those who prefer "Glamping", 4 miles down the road from Dunton Hot Springs is Dunton River Camp, that offers 8 luxurious tents. Cresto Ranch, as we call it, was a former cattle ranch from the late 1800's. The original farmhouse from the time sits in its original location about 20 feet from the West Fork of the Dolores River and on approximately 500 acres of amazing fields, meadows and forest. A large part of the land is still used for free range cattle grazing, but we have kept the area where the tents and the farmhouse are protected. We thought this property was perfectly suited to a summer only tented camp. We have a total of 8 tents, prospecter style, sitting on a 640 square foot wooden platform anchored to the bedrock. Each tent has all the amenities you would expect in a luxury hotel, however you are in an actual (albeit very large) tent.
