Architectural History

When General Richard Brownrigg moved with his wife, Mary Winifred Hoskins, and his family traveled to Columbus, Mississippi in the 1830's, Brownrigg modeled their home after Mary's childhood home in Edenton, North Carolina. The four-story structure features both Federal and Greek Revival details and retains much of the original glass and the original Carpenter locks. In the 1850s ten columns were added on the east and north facades to complement the original four solid-wood Roman Doric columns on the south facade. The existing floor plan is much like the original except for a few accommodations for modern living. Because of its rich architectural heritage, Columbus was chosen by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of the Dozen Distinctive Destinations in the country.
